Border Cross Over- Killimanjaro: 7 Days Londorossi/ Shira/ Mweka

DAY 1: Arrival in Nairobi and transfer to Loitokitok (Kibo slopes Cottages/ Snow cap cottages- Tanzania) for dinner and overnight.

DAY 2: After morning clearance with Kenya customs, transfer to Rongai custom in Tanzania 4km from Loitokitok to complete immigration formalities. Transfer a further 60 km to Londorossi Gate. 4-wheel drive takes you to the road head where part of the crew is waiting for you while the others have already gone to set up a camp at the 'Lion River' (3600m), your today's target. Lunch will be taken at the road head before you start your two hour walk across the Shira Plateau to the campsite.

DAY 3: After breakfast your climb continues towards Shira Hut (3880m) and further onto Barranco Hut (3965m). Lunch will be taken on the way. The walk takes you past the Moorland to the Alpine desert where at about (4400m) the route takes you to Barranco passing a mushroom-like rock formation. Today's hike takes about 8hrs and is ideal for acclimatization. The night will be spent in tents at the Barranco hut.

DAY 4: After the last good rest, today's target is the Arrow Hut which was destroyed by an avalanche. The distance is about 4km and may take you up to 5hrs since you have to master an altitude difference of almost 1000m. Lunch may be on the way or depending on your speed at the campsite at the Arrow Hut. On this day climbers can opt to hike for the Barafu Hut to avoid the final ascend via western breach.

DAY 5: After a short night and a hot drink the final ascend starts at about 2 am. The path leads through gradually steeper getting screed to the western breach. Some passages before the crater floor reach a grade 2 if there is ice. Crampons are mandatory. Depending on the weather you either cross or by-pass the Furtwangler Glacier and finally ascend the Uhuru peak via a steep passage. If the weather is good you reach the Uhuru peak (5895m) the rooftop of Africa at about 9.a.m. After a short photo stop the long descend to the Mweka Hut via Stella point begins at the barafu hut to where part of the crew has come along the Southern circuit and lunch is waiting for you. After another 4hrs descend, you finally reach Mweka Hut for a well-deserved rest.

DAY 6: The final leg which takes about 4hrs starts heading for Mweka Gate 1800m. Here you will be awarded your certificate before proceeding to Philip Hotel for a hot shower, dinner and overnight.

DAY 7: Transfer to Nairobi.


  • Climbers must be prepared to walk up to 8hrs a day and on the day of Hurt peak ascend for up to 14hrs.
  • Crampons are mandatory while an ice axe is very helpful.
  • People who are affected by high altitude can descend through the standard Rongai route and will be transferred by vehicle to Londorossi Gate.
  • Rock climbers need helmet, climbing ropes and ice axe for the Harns Meyer peak
  • (Grade 2-3) climbers must bring along their own climbing gears.
